Let it sink in. You are the absence of the sun. The dark cradle of the silver moon. Stars decorate your vastness. Man invented fire to protect against your embrace. You are dusk, shadow, night. You’re all in black, see? “Night.”

7. Costume: Lunch
Everybody loves lunch. Therefore, everybody will love you. There are variations to this costume, as you can tape bricks of Ramen, bagel pizzas or cans of Vienna sausages to your face and still elicit the same reaction. Comedy gold! You are lunch! The best part of this costume is that it’s edible. Once the fun is over, you can return alone to your fourth floor walk-up, sit on your futon and quietly make a meal out of your ensemble, quite possibly the only meal you’ve had all day.

6. Costume: Vampire
Women love vampires, which explains why they flock like lemmings to the emo teen bloodsuckers of Twilight and the fabulously morose undead of True Blood. This works to your advantage. Once upon a time, dressing up like a vamp meant a pricey Dracula outfit. Today’s Nosferatu are easier: Just pout, glower and act moody. Draw a trickle of blood down from the corner of your mouth, act depressed, and you’re the living embodiment of today’s gloomily twee movie monsters.

5. Costume: Passive-Aggressive Roommate
Everybody has had a passive-aggressive roommate—unless you have, in fact, been that nagging, spineless cohabitating weasel. This is simple, cost effective costuming at its best: Just scrawl irksome little reminders onto Post-it notes and slap them onto the shoulders, chests and faces of partygoers. Examples of the cowardly bon mots include: “Is that your girlfriend's hair in the shower?” And “The bills aren’t going to pay themselves, thanks.” And “It would be fantastic if you didn’t leave your cereal bowls in the sink.”

4. Costume: Simon Cowell
The American Idol judge struts like he invented product placement. But the truth is, he invented something better: A talent show devoid of talent that's so garishly obnoxious, it makes the Super Bowl halftime show look like subtle performance art. The great thing about dressing up like this bitchy, millionaire diva is that you’ll be in “character,” so you can sarcastically criticize everyone’s fancy costumes. “Horrid. Awful. I’ve seen better 'sexy' nurses at methadone clinics.”
Materials: Black T-shirt; English accent and aloof, imperious attitude

3. Costume: Dr. New Jersey
The pretentious graphic novel Watchmen is to comic book geeks what The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is to music hipsters: a beloved bore. This year saw the big budget movie adaptation of this comic book dirge, and it introduced the nuclear-powered, atom-smashing Dr. Manhattan. Well, you’re his younger brother. He’s not really a doctor, just a chiropractor with a suspended license. Dr. Manhattan is naked because he has transcended humanity and, therefore, notions of shame. His brother doesn’t wear pants because he has transcended sobriety. Dr. Manhattan can rearrange molecules; His brother, if you look at him crosswise, can rearrange your face. Yo, whatchoo lookin’ at?

2. Costume: Layoff Victim
This is s-o-o-o 2009. The great thing about this costume is that if you’re freshly laid off, you can roll into parties as is, wearing an authentic, shell-shocked, post-corporate curb stomp expression. As you stuff your pockets with candy, revelers will ask you what you’re dressed as, and you’ll respond “I just got laid off.” Oh, hearty laughs will be had, as your disheveled, hangdog outfit receives compliments for its verisimilitude. If you want to kick the look up, you can hand out your actual résumé.

1. Costume: The Ghost of Billy Mays
The Grim Reaper is such a star stalker: 2009 was a banner year for celebrity deaths, and the most upsetting was the untimely demise of Billy Mays, pitchman, infomercial superstar, intense facial-hair enthusiast. Pay homage to a larger-than-life dude who was good at his job, a silenced capitalistic siren whose late-night call seduced millions of suckers. And you’ll stand out from the morbid, unoriginal Michael Jackson hordes moonwalking about.

The Less Fortunate, my Grandma used to call them. Those folks whose grimy, impecunious fingers clung to rungs beneath ours on the economic ladder. Which is to say, homeless people and cockroaches. Because when I was growing up in Northeast Philly, even the economic ladder we clung to was metaphorical. We couldn’t afford a real one.

Still, for as bad as things were back then, Grandma never let us lose sight of the fact that The Less Fortunate were out there, hungry and tired and available for her to look down upon. Ah, bless her heart. She could always find the silver lining. Right up until she got hit by that bus on her way to Horn & Hardart for the $1.29 Early Bird Special. Grandma never really was the same again after that. She stopped doing all those little grandmotherly things. Like breathing.

You don’t need me to tell you that the ranks of the Less Fortunate have swelled to enormous proportions in recent months. And when times are tough, adult beverage lovers with suddenly weightless wallets turn to concoctions that, while cost-efficient, really have no business being put into the human body. Even I, a professional drinker, recently resorted to something called a “White-Trash Russian”—a toxic combination of Bowman’s Virginia vodka and Yoo-Hoo. I’m almost certain it did irreparable damage to my stomach lining and, quite possibly, my central nervous system. I walked with a limp and gained a southern accent for several weeks before I was right again. Then again, it did the job. I got so fucked up that for an entire evening I forgot how broke my ass is.

But it got me to thinking—is there such a thing as a "good" poor-man’s cocktail? Surely, not every cheap drink out there tastes like Sterno. When I see guys in tank tops drinking out of Styrofoam cups while munching on pigs in a blanket and cheese puffs at the local municipal park on Saturday afternoon they look so goddamn happy. What’s in those cups?

I knew of a few varieties. The ‘Poor Man’s Margarita’— tequila and Squirt— is a popular one out West. And in some Eastern cities, large parties of paupers used to get by on ‘Purple Passions’ — Welch’s grape juice and grain alcohol. But now I hear that ‘Blue Lagoons’—whatever that blue sports drink crap is plus grain alcohol—have supplanted them recently in some circles. I've heard that some less-than-tasteful folks in Denver mix a lovely thing called “Pee in a cup”—Mountain Dew and vodka (or Everclear), served warm for verisimilitude. Some of the curb-sitters in my old neighborhood in Philadelphia used to specialize in what was known as the “Colt Python” (from the handgun of the same name) by adding few shots of whatever cheap whiskey was on sale at the state store to a half-quart of Colt 45 malt liquor. My brother Brian used to go to parties down the Jersey Shore where they made "Skippies.” These consist of a bottle of rot-gut vodka, a case of Natural Light, and lemonade mix, stirred up in a trash can or beer tub with ice.

Sound strategies all. But I needed more information, so I put the word out to my network of alcohol operatives.

Terry Sullivan tells me cash-strapped drunks in Chicago swear by “Muddy Bottoms,” a potent combination of Green River “gourmet” soda and cheap bourbon.

Ashley Perkins out in Salt Lake City loves her some Trailer Park Sangria. "Buy the cheapest box of red wine available. Some places even take food stamps. Drink some wine to make room in the box. Add grape juice." Smooth.

Playboy's own Rocky Rakovic says his favorite cheap drink is the Pabst-Smir, "a shot of Smirnoff dropped into a glass of Pabst." Bear in mind, however, " you can’t drop your own shot, someone else needs to 'administer' it to you." You stay classy, Rock.

Ashley Rodgers from Culver City, California says a pint of Popov vodka and a Slurpee gets the job done.

And don't challenge Carole Parker from Marina Del Rey to a drinking contest any time soon. Her broke-ass hooch of choice? Grape-flavored Boone's Farm. "Used to drink it with quaaludes," she says. "The vomit was Technicolor." Thanks for sharing, Carole!

At this point I felt I had gathered enough intelligence (or rather, lack thereof) to conduct my own reconnaissance mission. I hit the closest liquor store by my house, Davy Jones Locker, which isn’t so much a final resting place for dead seamen as it is the killing fields for homeless people’s livers. Vlad behind the counter told me the cheapest drunk in the store was a tie between a pint of Popov vodka (way to call it, Ashley Rodgers!) and an abomination called Kessler American Blended Whiskey, which bills itself as “Smooth as Silk.” I’d venture it’s more of a silk-burlap blend. In the interest of science (and because they were only $5 a pop) I bought them both. However, after some brief experiments with the Kessler, I lost all interest in science and instead became fascinated by something written on the side of the bottle of Popov. "NOW! Unbreakable Bottle." Seems like a handy trait in a product people use to make themselves unable to carry things. Plus, I like the sense of urgency generated by the exclamation mark. It’s as if they’re daring you not to start drinking as soon as you hit the parking lot. In my lubricated state, however, I saw this less as a service to the consumer than as a prideful boast. A challenge, perhaps. Which is how this happened:

So as you can see, my fellow impoverished boozehounds, the Obama-ites do have it right after all. There is Hope. It's just that Hope is trying to get out from under a bad mortgage, so it's going by an assumed name these days. That name? Popov Vodka. Sure, it may not be as invincible as the fancy happy juice—I once heard about a case of Ketel One that survived an airplane crash—but at least you can rest easy knowing that even if you do manage to break a bottle of Popov, you can still drink out of it without fear of slicing up your small intestine with shards of glass. How's that for a silver lining, Grandma? So call me Less Fortunate if you will. Hell, call me anything you’d like. I won’t be listening. Because I'm pretty sure the Popov has made me go deaf.

PLAYBOY: Your face launched a thousand ships in the Brad Pitt epic Troy, Josh Hartnett is obsessed with you in Wicker Park, you and Nicolas Cage have twice hunted for National Treasure, and we’re about to see you in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, playing a World War II German film star and Nazi hunter. You’ve played so many different sorts of roles with so many different accents that few people seem to know you’re actually German.
KRUGER: I’m from a small village right next to a forest close to Hildesheim, Germany, and my childhood was spent building tree houses and, for class assignments, doing things like observing how baby geese swim. My dad left when I was 13, so it was just me, my younger brother and my mom. We didn’t have much money. My brother and I weren’t allowed to watch TV other than a few programs my mom chose. It was a very protected childhood, and it was definitely German.

PLAYBOY: You must have been a knockout. Who protected you from the local guys?
KRUGER: I had a childhood boyfriend, but I certainly wasn’t the hot chick. I stood out only for being the thinnest, most awkward one, with long blonde hair. Guys mostly ignored me. I was dedicated to becoming a ballerina. I went to dance class while other girls played soccer with the boys, so they were the popular ones.Then I began modeling pretty early.

PLAYBOY: Did modeling make you more or less popular?
KRUGER: The other kids resented that I was getting okay grades while being excused for being away a lot. The principal finally forced me to make a choice: “Either you’re a model or a student.” My mom said I could go to Paris for a year, but if modeling didn’t work out, I had to come back and finish school. Because she trusted me, I tried to be responsible and not fuck it up.

PLAYBOY: Was Mom wise to trust you?
KRUGER: In Paris I did all those stupid things you’re supposed to do, but I was a pretty good kid who didn’t want to go out and get crazy. I didn’t even drink until I was 21. I definitely succeeded as a model against the odds—like looking 13 when I was actually 16 and standing only five-seven, which at the time was very short for a model.

PLAYBOY: Considering your success, even you must have realized that you had in fact become “the hot chick.”
KRUGER: Paris was the first time I felt men were really looking at me. I enjoyed that Frenchmen were gallant and tried to woo girls a bit more ardently than the men where I come from did. I was faithful to my childhood boyfriend from Germany for, like, six months, and then we broke up. I fell in love with a French student, and we ended up dating for three years. We broke up too, but he’s still my best friend.

PLAYBOY: What sort of men, French or not, would never get to first base with you?
KRUGER: I’ve never liked arrogant men, the ones with the smooth line all ready to go, like, “Oh, you have the most beautiful eyes” or whatever. I hate over-the-top guys, the ones who drive yellow Porsches. I like tall guys who carry themselves with a confident stride and have good skin and an air of taking care of themselves. I generally don’t go for traditionally handsome guys, either. I prefer a kind of broken-in, goofy look.

PLAYBOY: Have you been more likely to have your heart broken or to be the heartbreaker?
KRUGER: I think I broke a lot of guys’ hearts when I was younger, not because I intended to but because I was selfish. I ended things with guys I was never really in love with and probably left a little harshly and abruptly. But when I was 21, modeling and living in New York, I had my heart broken for the first time. I was madly in love with this guy who was horrible to me. That was the worst year of my life. Ever since, I’ve been a lot more cautious about treating other people’s hearts carefully.

PLAYBOY: You began turning up in acting roles in 2002. Walk us through the transition from aspiring dancer and model to actress.
KRUGER:Growing up I never even thought about anything else but being a dancer. Bythe age of 11 I was studying with the Royal Ballet of London, but I suffered a knee injury at 13, which devastated me. I love fashion, and I won a modeling contract and worked all the time, which was fun at first, but I got bored quickly. I moved to New York and shot a lot of ad campaigns for Saks, and I remember thinking, I don’t want to be touched anymore. I was so fed up with constantly putting on makeup, taking off makeup, having my hair teased. That’s when I began pursuing acting roles.

PLAYBOY: You burst on the scene in Troy playing the legendarily alluring Helen opposite Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom. Did you take it hard when many critics knocked you and the movie?
KRUGER: I thought we were making movie history, so the criticism was not easy, especially when it was only my second big role in a feature film. Ultimately I think it made me a lot stronger and definitely much more of a fighter.

PLAYBOY: Were you comfortable filming nude scenes for Troy even though they didn’t show up in the movie?
KRUGER: Nudity was always in the script, and Troy wasn’t intended to be a PG-13 film. But under studio pressure to get abroad audience, the nude scenes were cut so they could get the rating down to PG-13.

PLAYBOY: You and Brad Pitt don’t have any scenes together in Troy, but you have lots of them in Inglourious Basterds.
KRUGER: I’m one of a group of people trying to assassinate Hitler, and since it’s Quentin, the movie is absurd, funny and sometimes so violent that it becomes even funnier. But then the action turns serious and frightening. I’m sure it’s going to ruffle a few feathers. I think I have the coolest character next to Brad’s. I’m a German movie star who also spies for the Brits, like Marlene Dietrich. Quentin loves strong women in his films, and as you can imagine, we clicked in a way I’ve never before clicked with a director.

PLAYBOY: Did Tarantino write the role for you?
KRUGER: [Laughing] The part was not written with me in mind at all. He wanted everyone to speak in his or her native language, and because he didn’t believe I was German, he didn’t even want to meet me. I learned 30 pages of dialogue in German and English and went to the audition dressed like the character. I killed it. I did everything except sleep with the director to get that part.

PLAYBOY: Tarantino buffs have noted from his movies that he has a bit of a thing about women’s feet. Did you know anything about that going in, or did you become aware of it during filming?
KRUGER: I guess I’m not a very good film geek because I had seen and admired all his films and didn’t know that. Quentin absolutely denies it, by the way. It’s funny, though, because I was scheduled for what was supposed to be one last day of shooting, which turned into three days of him doing six close-ups of my feet and two of my face.

PLAYBOY: How did you and Brad Pitt get along during filming? The tabloids reported rumors that you were having a romantic flirtation and even an affair.
KRUGER: I’d seen Brad only once since we made Troy. He’s a fantastic guy, but it’s hard for me to understand the life he and Angelina Jolie lead, because they get so much media attention. We had one day on the set of Inglourious Basterds, and by the next week we were on the cover of some tabloid for having an “on-set affair.” I don’t know how he lives with that stuff or if he even reads it, but it’s distracting.

PLAYBOY: Since it’s so common for actors to blur the line between fantasy and reality, how do you handle on-the-set temptation?
KRUGER: It can be confusing when you’re green, especially when you’re in an isolated location, away from familiar people and surroundings. People fall in love with their co-stars when they’re open to that. I enjoy hanging with the crew, but I’m in a place in my life where I’m very happy and don’t want to change things.

PLAYBOY: It’s easy to see why male journalists and TV interviewers go ga-ga over you. Has anybody from the press ever overstepped his bounds?
KRUGER: A journalist wrote me a couple of love letters, but I think that was a oneoff because he was genuinely interested in me. I’ve had journalists call my mom and show up at her workplace. There’s stuff I’d definitely sue people over, though. They can write anything they want about me but not when it gets to my family.

PLAYBOY: You’ve made two National Treasure movies with Nicolas Cage. What’s your experience with his famed intensity and reported eccentricities?
KRUGER: He’s definitely an eccentric person, but it’s about how his imagination can run wild. Give him an idea for a scene and he can spin it in 4,000 different ways, which is impressive. I can see when he started out and was a lot younger that he must have been really wild.

PLAYBOY: You and actor Joshua Jackson have been in a relationship for several years. How have you come to terms with the public scrutiny that comes with being involved with another celebrity?
KRUGER: Joshua and I are not Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, so it’s not like we have four cars following us wherever we go. There are days when it’s annoying to have photographers follow you, especially when you’re in pajama pants and just want to get a cup of coffee. If you’re hungover, the last thing you want is to have someone take your photograph. It hasn’t been too bad, though. We’re not that famous.

KRUGER: Constant seduction of your partner, no matter how long you’ve been together, keeps a relationship alive.
